Mission Statement and Core Principles
Founded in 1974, Sunnybrook is an independent preschool for children ages three through seven licensed by the State of New Hampshire. The philosophy of Sunnybrook is based on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. Children at Sunnybrook are viewed as being capable and intrinsically motivated learners. The preschool years are a very special time in the life of the child and his/her family. This is a time of natural curiosity and enthusiasm that allow children the opportunity to make deep connections to the world around them.
The mission of Sunnybrook Montessori School is to provide a nurturing, respectful and vibrant learning environment where children explore and create.
Sunnybrook Montessori School is …..
A place where all are inherently respected. Children are unique and worthy. We value diversity and recognize and respect the beauty and value in each individual. We appreciate varied styles of being, engaging and learning.
Child-directed in a prepared Montessori environment. We believe in children’s inherent love of learning, curiosity, and independence. Students learn to take care of themselves, their belongings, their environment and their community. The philosophy and pedagogy of Sunnybrook is based on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. This includes using a Three-period lesson, work centers, sensory (five senses) materials, sequential learning, and one on one and small group learning where the teacher facilitates a student’s exploration.
An environmental steward. We care about the earth. Children learn about our environment, conservation, ecology, and biology. We recycle, use natural materials and follow a no waste policy when possible.
Connected to the outdoors. We believe in the importance of daily connections to nature through unstructured outdoor play. This is a time of natural curiosity and enthusiasm that allows children the opportunity to make deep connections to the world around them.
Creative and interdisciplinary. Children have daily opportunities for creative expression and connection to the world through music and art. We believe in the importance of the interconnected nature of all subjects. Because of the young nature of the children our emphasis with art is on process, not product.
A school with a rich history of creativity. Sunnybrook’s special magic comes from the spontaneity and flexibility of its program, allowing its teachers to express themselves freely, enriching the learning experience with their own unique talents and interests. For over forty-five years, Sunnybrook has been blessed with teachers who have given their students amazing experiences, drawing from their passions for classical music, the natural world, and performing arts. These lessons are often the ones that are the most-treasured and create the fond memories that tie together the generations that have attended and supported Sunnybrook.
