Happy November!
November is an exciting time at Sunnybrook because it means, Stone Soup! We read our first Stone Soup stories this week: the french version of Stone Soup by Marcia Brown and Stone Soup: Some Friends to Feed which has a CD that accompanies it with a great song the children enjoy singing. To help us remember the story we made story retelling bracelets. The children were given a pipe cleaner and different colored beads. The beads represent important parts of the story such as the three soldiers, the pot, the community, etc. The hope was that the children could use their bracelets to retell the story to a friend or family member. This is the second year we’ve used story retelling bracelets with Stone Soup and it has helped improve comprehension with the story.
Our older students are working on identifying the rhyming words in the poem. We are all working on memorizing it!
On Thursday we enjoyed a trip to the library for story hour. The theme was the letter “E” and we heard stories about emotions and Elmer the Elephant and sang songs. The children enjoyed making their own patchwork elephant. All the students did a great job using their walking feet on the sidewalk and crossing the street and had great library manners.
Our Friday students finished up their NH animal unit with a story about deer by Jim Arnosky. We started a new unit learning about the solar system. We did a planet coloring sheet and learned the names of all the planetsĀ and some interesting facts about each. We were impressed to learn that Saturn has 18 moons. The children made paper sculptures in the afternoon. We had many Jupiters and one Sun.
Working on the paper sculptures:
