Snow, Mud, and Water

Mud & Water

Mud & Water

Snow, mud, and water were our outdoor mediums this week.  Fresh snow covered the playground almost daily, which was perfect for snowmen, snowballs, sledding, and shoveling.  The warmth melted it away quickly and water and mud were used for mud soup and mud potions.

On Monday we studied the parts of a plant for science.  We carefully removed one of the classroom plants from the pot and shook the soil from the roots.  We drew and labeled pictures of the parts of a plant and discussed what job each part has – leaves for breathing and using sunlight to make food, roots for absorbing water and nutrients from the soil, the stem for carrying the water up to the leaves,  and the fruit for housing the seeds.

For art we rolled paint onto bubble wrap and printed it onto paper.  Each day we chose new colors to try out so we had some variety.

We began to learn about amphibians this week, a class of vertebrates that begin life in water and undergo metamorphosis.  They have moist skin and most of them live near water.  Amphibians include frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts.

Throughout the year we have been building a kindness chain, a set of paper links that each list a kind act that a friend has performed for another.  It has gradually lengthened as children take turns sharing helping or thoughtful things that have been done for them, such as helping to open a snack item, helping clean up someone’s work, comforting someone when hurt, or playing with them when asked.  The children share only things that others have done for them, so that we focus on being grateful for what others have done, rather than drawing attention to what we, ourselves have done.  They are always excited to share the helpful things that they have witnessed or experienced.

On Thursday, we introduced the Tibetan singing bowl, which we used to draw attention to sound, silence, and actively listening.  The children sat silently as we struck the bowl, then listened until we could not hear it any longer.  This simple act of focusing our listening is a brief practice in mindfulness, which the Monday/Friday students have been working on over the past couple of months.

The children have become so interested in reading and writing, which is such a complex, multi-aspect process.  The kindergarten students have been great motivators for the younger students, who are in different stages of becoming readers.  It is fabulous to see so much passion for literacy!

The children were very excited to spend the day with Tammy on Friday while Lyn met with parents to share all of the things that everyone has been doing at school.  We have such a fabulous group of children!  It has truly been a joy to watch them progress throughout the year and we are looking forward to the last seven weeks of school and all of the things that we will be doing before it ends!

It is time!  Springish weather brought springish play.  The blocks were used to build castles.  A store was set up.  The snow was turning to water, and oh what fun that makes!  If there is water, it must be played in.  The ice was broken and dug out of the one puddle, which happened to be right at the gate, and put into sleds.  The muddy water was shoveled out and put into the sleds as well.  As the days got warmer, more snow melted, creating rivers running all over.  It was interesting to watch the water flow from higher to lower ground and observe the swirling silt.

Monday students did some sewing for art.  They traced and cut out circles, then used a straight stitch to sew all the way around the edge, creating little bags for their Quiet rocks.  The older students volunteered to help the younger students, and many made additional bags for themselves, family, or friends.

We wrapped up our fish study by learning about eels and rays.  We read and discussed the stories Think of an Eel, Manta Rays, and Rosie Ray – A Tale of Watery Wings.

The afternoon students drew, labeled, and filled their own fish, including hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, great white sharks, goldfish, clownfish, and flying fish, which we hung from the ceiling in the art area.

Thursday morning we opened up the piano to see the complexity inside.  We watched as a key was pressed and how it pushed on one part, which pushed another, which pushed a felt covered hammer against some strings.  When the strings are struck, they vibrate, which creates sound.  Everyone had a turn to play the piano while classmates conducted, played drums, maracas, sticks, tone blocks, a kalimba thumb piano, or the frog guiro.

spring cleaning

spring cleaning

Friday students were in the spring cleaning mood.  They started by cleaning the easels, then moved on to the rest of the classroom.  They cleaned the mats under the painting rack, the rack itself, the art shelves, the tables, and the floor.  They were busy cleaning when the Easter Bunny arrived for a visit.  It was exciting to see the Easter Bunny, as his Sunday visit was much talked about and anticipated.  There was some discussion about whether it was the real Easter Bunny or Gerrie Scott helping out the Easter Bunny, and everyone came to their own conclusions.

With the fabulously warm weather we spent so much time outside that we got a late start on science, so we decided to save it for Monday so that friends did not miss out on it.  It is still a surprise, so we are looking forward to seeing what we will be doing!

For Monday art we learned about the artist Henry Matisse.  We read the stories, Henri Matisse: Drawing with Scissors and The Iridescence of Birds.  The children then made their own Matisse style pictures by cutting and pasting colored paper.

A Handful of Quiet

A Handful of Quiet

Five day students have been reading the book A Handful of Quiet by Thich Nhat Hanh: Happiness in Four Pebbles.  So far they have read about 3 of 4 qualities of being happy, selecting pebbles to represent each quality, and drawing pictures that correspond.  They have focused on being present like a flower, solid like a mountain, and calm like a reflecting lake.  They have practiced being present and mindful while sitting quietly and attending to their breathing while holding pebbles that represent each of the qualities.

Grammy Riff donated soil, pots, seeds from her garden, and greenhouse containers so we could plant some cleomes and zinnias.   It was a lot of fun getting covered in soil while mixing it with water and filling up the pots, then poking in the seeds, covering them, and watering them.  We are anxious to see them sprout.

We began to learn about the solar system and the planets.  Some of the Friday students demonstrated how the sun spins and the planets orbit the sun while spinning.  They demonstrated how we have night and day when the portion of the earth we live on is either facing away or toward the sun. We read Planets and portions of Kids First Big Book of Space to learn more about each planet, their names, their order in the solar system, and their make-up.  We learned that the first four planets are made of rock and metal, and the last four giant planets are made of gas.

We read the story Mr. Gumpy’s Outing about some children and animals who join Mr. Gumpy on his boat for a ride on the river.  All is peaceful until the animals and children start to chase, squabble, muck about, etc., and the boat tips over.  We traded the farm out for a boat for the animals to sail around on, and the children had fun loading them up.

Irish dancing

Irish dancing

During circle time we did a lot of moving and music.  On Saint Patrick’s day we turned on some Irish Dancing music and did some Irish jigs, stomping, tapping, and hopping around.  On Wednesday we took out the percussion instruments and had fun playing them loudly and quietly.  On Thursday we took out the parachute.  We took turns running underneath, shaking it like crazy, and sitting below it while others shook it so we could hear the thunder noises it made.

marble test one

marble test one

Friday students had fun creating and floating boats.  They hypothesized about how to make clay float.  They dropped a clay ball in the water first, which sank straight to the bottom.  Then they decided to make it smaller, and it still sank.  Then they tried making it flat, and still it sank, so they made it small and flat.  When we finally made it curved, like a bowl, we discovered that we could make it float.  We also floated foam trays, which, like wood, will float no matter the shape.  We tested them to see how many marbles they could hold before capsizing and sinking, and came up with some ways to hold more marbles by creating sections.  It was a lot of fun playing with boats!
