Yay for Sunshine!

tee-pee

We tried to spend as much time outside as possible, and the children were moving, moving, moving.  They built a tee-pee, dug in the sand box, played baseball, freeze tag, and jump rope.  They threw soft footballs, Frisbees, and a boomerang.  They examined seed pods from the trees, ant holes, and any insects they could find. The afternoon students had almost daily picnics for lunch.  They even brought out paper and markers in the afternoon to extend their outdoor time.  It was such a great week to be out!

For Monday art the students made mother’s day flower gardens.  Throughout the week, every child had the opportunity to make one or two or three flower gardens for their moms and grandmas.  Happy mother’s day to all of the mothers!

dragon fly eyes

dragon fly eyes

We began our final animal unit with our study of insects.  We read the book What Are Insects and learned that all insects have three parts – the head, thorax, and abdomen, that they all have six legs, two antennae, and a waterproof exoskeleton.  Many of them also have wings which they use to fly.

science time

science time

The science table has been well used this week.  Our black swallowtail chrysalis has remained in the tank all winter, and it appears to be darkening, which we hope means that it may still emerge as a butterfly.  We have been keeping an eye on it.  The children have been enjoying the life cycle of a bee, butterfly, and ladybug models, as well as the many large insect toys at the science table, including a large bee, dragonfly, housefly, stink bug, praying mantis, ladybug, grasshopper, ant, and beetle.  They have also been looking through the dragonfly eye viewers to see the way an insect’s eye sees.

For Thursday circle time we introduced the dancing ribbons.  As they are attached to sticks, we reviewed the safety rules, then everyone found a spot where they would have plenty of space to be safe, and had fun dancing with the ribbons to some soft harp music then lively multicultural dancing music.  It was a lot of fun!

Friday students had several fun science activities.  First they placed beans in a cup with a wet paper towel and placed them in the window.  We will keep them moist and observe them over the next couple of weeks to see what happens.  Next they examined the insect models and drew them, labeling the three parts – head, thorax, and abdomen.  Finally, they looked through a microscope at a leaf to see the cells and chloroplasts, which looked like frog freckles.

We wrapped up our study of amphibians by reading about salamanders and newts.  We enjoyed the story The Salamander Room, about a little boy who brings home a salamander to live in his bedroom and his plan to bring in leaves and trees to make the salamander feel at home.

On Thursday we explored string instruments.  We looked at a guitar and a violin and took turns plucking the strings.  We learned that string instruments are played by bowing or plucking, and include instruments such as guitars, violins, ukuleles, and harps.  Kelly brought her guitar and she played and sang some songs for us, and introduced us to some of the different parts of a guitar.

We had a funny, furry, black visitor Thursday morning named Willow.  She was curious about our classroom, and the children were all thrilled to play with, hold, and pet her.  She was so soft and snuggly!  Thank you Shannon family for bringing her in!

In the sensory table there was soapy water and lots of fun water tools.  The children enjoyed washing, pouring, squirting, stirring, beating, and whipping up bubbles.

For science Friday students explored ice and ice melt in water.  In the morning we placed ice cubes in a container of water and marked the water line.  We made predictions about what might happen to the water line as the ice melted.  We observed that the ice floated just below the surface of the water, and a little bit of it stuck out.  We also filled a cup with water and marked the water line, then put it in the freezer.  At the end of the day, we observed that the water line had not changed as the ice in the water melted.  We also observed that the water in the cup expanded as it froze, and the water line went up.

For Monday art the children had a glorious time getting messy with finger paint.  The art table continued to be busy the rest of the week as children created multiple finger paint masterpieces, and just generally enjoyed the feeling of paint squishing and squeezing through their fingers.

We continued to learn about amphibians this week, more specifically toads.  We read the book Frog or Toad?  How Do you Know?  and learned that frogs have wet, smooth skin, long strong back legs for jumping, and teeth in the top jaw, while toads have drier, bumpy skin, shorter legs, and no teeth.

We celebrated three birthdays this week.  On Wednesday we enjoyed birthday cookies with the newest five year old, and on Thursday we enjoyed chocolate covered strawberries with the newest six year old and chocolate cupcakes with the newest seven year old.  Each birthday child took a turn holding the earth and orbiting the candle sun while everyone counted for them, then sang “Happy Birthday.”

We had some goodbyes with lots of hugs.  We will miss our two friends who are moving on!  We wish the best to you and your families.

The children were feeling the need to clean again this week.  They wiped down and washed chairs, tables, shelves, the floor, and the classroom materials.  They were busy, and all of their efforts have left us with a nice clean classroom.
